New Classes for 8th Graders Starts Tomorrow!

Dear 8th Grade Students and Parents:

We are very excited to announce that we are going to begin a new class for each 8th grader beginning tomorrow (January 31st).  For the first half of the year we have had all our Junior High students in technology classes, as directed by the IB program.  However, we have now realized that many of our 8th graders in particular would benefit more from targeted classes designed to help them with an area of weakness, or greater potential strength.  We are going to be referring to these as intervention classes, with each student assigned to a particular area of intervention based on their individual needs.

Our process for determining the intervention class for each student was this:  on Friday, January 27th, the administration and all of the 8th grade teachers met together.  We analyzed each student’s course work, class test results, and prior years CRT results in each subject.  Using that data we went through an individualized analysis of each 8th grader to determine where we could provide the most impactful targeted interventions for each of them.  Using this data and the teachers’ personal insight on each student, we placed students in subject specific classes (e.g. math, science, business technology, reading) or different study skills classes.  While some students were placed in a subject class because they were struggling, others were placed in a subject matter class because we believe that they haven’t fully capitalized on what could be the subject of their greatest strength.  Alternatively, some students were assigned to study skills to allow them to have more time to work on homework in subjects they already seem to grasp, while others were placed in a study skills class to work with a teacher on a particular need (e.g. test taking strategies or organization).  These classes may be intervening where there is a weakness, a strength the student could maximize, a particular issue to be addressed, or simply to provide a new challenge to a student at risk of becoming bored in their current classes.

While some of these students may spend the entire semester in the same intervention class, other students may be rotated into various classes once a skill or subject has been mastered.  We will communicate with your students when that is the case.

Thank you for the support in this change.  We hope you and your students find this targeted approach beneficial.

Lunchroom volunteers needed!

Dear Parents,

The junior high is in need of help during lunch.  You would only be needed from about 10:30am to 1pm.  You will have a variety of jobs you may be asked to do.  None of them require heavy lifting.  We do ask that you do not bring younger children.  They will be a distraction to you and the kids.  We need a list of people we can call at the last minute when the regular lunch crew is not available.

If you can do this, please  follow the link below and fill in your name and number and what days you are free to be called should the need arise.

Thank you,
Providence Hall Junior High Phast

Junior High - January's Opera

January’s Opera; Verdi's Rigoletto, January 19, 2012 7 P.M.

Utah Opera holds Opera-tunities nights, where students can attend final dress rehearsals of Utah Opera’s productions at Capitol Theatre. Tickets for students are only $3, and educators or chaperone tickets cost $5.  Individual walk up tickets are sold starting at 6:30 PM the night of the performance.  All Providence Hall Junior High students are invited to attend.  You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the theater.

In January, Utah Opera presents Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto. The action follows Rigoletto, a duke’s jester, whose insensitive mocking of another man’s anger earns him a curse and an eventual loss of horrific proportions. One of opera’s most famous musical numbers "La donna รจ mobile"comes from Rigoletto. I bet you’ll recognize it! Copy and paste this link to listen to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCFEk6Y8TmM

Order forms will be handed out in music classes on the 9th and 10th and are also available from Mrs. Smith or the front office.  Please place the students name under “Faculty member’s name” and attach the money in an envelope.  These forms need to be returned Thursday at the latest to Mrs. Smith.

We will be having a guest speaker come in to give us an overview of the Opera sometime next week.  Don't miss out on this opportunity!  Please email me if your student is interested in coming. I will need Chaperones also so please email me if you're interested in coming with us.  I will hand out a form Monday and Tuesday for buying tickets and would like them back by the next class period.  Please plan to arrive at 6:30 to get settled in your seat and remember to dress nice!
