Meet James Barker: Board of Trustees Member

We are pleased to announce that James Barker will be joining the Providence Hall Board of Trustees for the coming year.  James is the father of 3 sons attending Providence Hall.  As a parent he has been an active volunteer with our school for some time, most recently helping orchestrate the move-in of the Junior High.  James will be serving on the Board as a parent advisor with particular focus on the needs of our Special Education program and students.

James in his own words:

When I was growing up and going to school I didn’t understand the significance of the education I was getting (or not getting).  Like most kids do, I took for granted the things I was being taught by some great teachers.  Likewise, I accepted as fact what I was learning from teachers that were not so great.  It wasn’t until I was putting into practice all the things I had been taught that I realized which teachers had prepared me for life and which teachers had done me a disservice.  Having said that I believe that it is up to the individual to make the most out of the hand they have been dealt.

My kids have been going to Providence Hall Elementary since it opened and I have been very pleased with the results that I have seen with them.  I feel that I as a parent have a say in my child’s education.  The teachers are open in their communication with the parents and the volunteer policy of the school involves the parents in a way that I believe is vital to a well rounded education.  The IB program shows the kids how to experience what they are learning and how they all work together in their lives.

I am proud to serve on the Providence Hall Board because all the members of the board have such a commitment to the success of this school.  I see this as an opportunity to give back to a school that has given so much to my family.  I look forward to preserving the integrity Providence Hall has built while bringing my experience to add anything I can.

Providence Hall Elementary Christmas Concert

Providence Hall Elementary Presents Our Annual
Christmas Concert

Dear Providence Hall Parents and Students,

Our annual Christmas programs will be held at 7:00 pm for our K-2nd grades on December 5th, and for 3rd-5th on December 6th. It will be at our Junior High on their wonderful stage.

Your children are working very hard to make this a fun and delightful performance for your family.  It is very important for them to be to the performance as it is part of their participation grade in Music Class for this quarter.  If they are unable to make it to the performance, I will need a call or an email from you to let me know why they are unable to make it so that I can excuse them.

Thanks again for sharing your wonderful student(s) with me this year.  They continually make me smile.

Music Instructor

"Can the Principal" Canned Food Drive

Monday, November 28th through Friday, December 9th Providence Hall Elementary School will be participating in a Canned Food Drive in connection with our local Herriman Jiffy Lube to support the Utah Food Bank.  We will be collecting non-perishable food items at the school and at the end of the food drive Jiffy Lube will match our donation – doubling the amount of food the Utah Food Bank receives for this holiday season!  Collected cans will be stacked in Mrs. Watson's office, and we want to receive enough cans to fill her entire office and force her to work in the hall for the duration of the food drive!  The Utah Food Bank is in great need this holiday season and we want to do our part at Providence Hall to support them.  So start saving your cans and send them with your students starting next week!

No-Fuss Fundraiser
For those of you who are new to Providence Hall Elementary, you will be thrilled to learn that you won't need to sell popcorn, candy bars, or wrapping paper.  In order to make fundraising as efficient as possible, we have our year-long No Fuss Fundraiser.  We understand that the beginning of school requires a great deal of spending.  Because of that, we have provided the ability to contribute all year long!  In order for our ePHAST Parents program to work well, we ask for $25 per student.  This helps pay for activities throughout the year, and allows ePHAST Parents to help the school as much as possible.  If you have several children in the school, feel free to spread out your donations throughout the year to make things easier for you financially.  We appreciate your contribution! If you would like to write a check, please make it out to PHAST Parents and give it to Kathy Davis in an envelope marked PHAST.  If you would like to donate online, Click here to donate!

School Land Trust Committee Volunteers Needed

Dear Parents,

Providence Hall has elected to receive School Land Trust funds each year to support the academic achievement of our students.  In electing to receive the funds, a School Land Trust Committee must be maintained.

The membership of our school community council includes the principal, teachers elected by teachers, and parents elected by parents of students at the school. Charter schools such as ours have trust land committees where elected parents make up the majority of committee members. The most effective councils and committees are those whose members work collaboratively to develop plans to aid all students in reaching their potential, as ours has done over the past 3 years.

The Providence Hall School Land Trust Committee prepares a plan that identifies the school's greatest academic need(s). Plans are submitted Utah School Lands Trusts Administration.  The committee receives an annual dividend from the permanent State School Fund every July to implement your school's approved plan during the next school year.

Providence Hall currently has a committee established however, the committee needs two additional parent representatives.  A parent representative needs to be elected from the jr. high and elementary school.

If you are interested in serving on the committee, please email me a short description explaining your interest in serving and information about yourself.  I will post the descriptions on the election survey to assist parents in making their selection for the committee.

If you would like to run, I need your information by Friday, November 11th and the election will be held on Wednesday, November 16th.

If you would like to learn more about the program, you can visit the website at www.schoollandtrust.org.

Thank you for your interest and support!

Carpool and Traffic Information

Dear Providence Hall Parents and Students:

We are pleased to announce that after a lot of productive discussion with the City of Herriman and Unified Police we have worked out a traffic plan that we all believe will help our students be safe as they travel to and from the school.  The traffic changes you will see not only address issues we have had this year, but also help put a safe plan in place for when Mountain View Corridor opens in the coming year.    This will mean some changes for both walkers, bikers and drivers coming to the schools so we want you to be aware of the following:

  • In approximately the next week or so Herriman will be installing flashing school zone lights in the school area in front of the Elementary and in front of the Junior High.  This will help alert drivers to when we have students walking in the area.
  • The city will also be installing a 4-way stop at the intersection of River Chase and Mount Ogden Peak (near the North West front corner of the school).  This will enable a more safe crosswalk crossing Mt. Ogden Peak Drive for our students both before and after school.  We ask that parents respect this 4-way stop as they would any other and be careful to not park in the intersection, on the crosswalk or otherwise obstruct the flow of traffic in this area  Remember to take whichever lane is clear when dropping off students at the elementary school whether closest to the school or through the parking lot. This will be especially important to keep the new 4-way stop from backing up.
  • Unified Police have also graciously agreed to put an additional crossing guard on the cross-walk in front of the Elementary!  This crossing guard is trained to help ensure our students' safety and will be manning the crosswalk during peak student crossing times.  As an aside we are thrilled to be able to allow our staff who have been covering this crosswalk to re-focus on the student's learning.   Please be careful and cognizant of this new crossing-guard and respectful of any directions she gives.  Her primary focus is our student's safety.
  • With the addition of the crossing guard and the new safety this crosswalk will afford we are encouraging students and parents to safely use the North side of Mt. Ogden Peak as a pick-up zone for their children.  We continue to encourage parents to NOT use the Juniper Point subdivision as a pick-up area as we continue to receive complaints from these residents about parents and students who are causing our neighbors problems after school.
  • For those of you who would like to know more, we encourage you to check out the complete traffic safety plans for both schools at:
  1. Elementary:  http://www.snapforschools.com/Map_view.aspx?EntityID=1375
  2. JR. High:  http://www.snapforschools.com/Map_view.aspx?EntityID=1376

These are expensive and valuable changes for us and represent a huge investment in our students' safety on the part of Herriman and Unified Police.  We want to thank the City Council and Mayor, Herriman City Officials Brett Wood and Gordon Haight,  Lt. Anjewierden from Unified Police and our very own Coralee Moser for the many hours each of them put into helping create and implement these changes.

Sincerely,

Providence Hall

PHAST Facts - November 4, 2011

We have had some feedback that PHAST Facts is difficult to read, so we are trying out some changes this week.  The individual columns will provide specific information on the different schools, and hopefully allow for more space.  We hope that this makes things a little easier for parents who are looking for just Elementary School or just Junior High information.

We welcome your questions and comments, and would love to hear from you.
