Over the past five weeks, our Kindergarten Friends have been learning about the seven continents of the world. Each week we focus on a new continent. This week we have had the chance to learn about the diverse continent of Africa. The children have loved learning about the different music, foods, and animals of Africa! One thing we have shared with the children is how many villages and people in Africa are very poor and do not have the same things that we enjoy here in North America. We have had the chance to make toys out of recycled materials, similar to what many children in Africa do because they do not have stores or money to buy toys of their own.
During our discussions and investigations in class, the children have impressed and surprised us by their maturity and thoughtfulness. We have had a number of students exclaim, “Can I give the kids in Africa my old toys?” and “I have clothes I don’t wear anymore! Can I give them my clothes?” As soon as the other children heard those ideas, there was no stopping them! These children want to help the kids in Africa. What a great example of CARING, OPEN-MINDED students: Just what we hope for in IB students.
Laura Isanga, a parent here at Providence Hall, has family in a small village in Uganda. She and her husband are part of a charitable organization here in the States that send aid to Africa. She has graciously offered to send any donations received to Uganda. Therefore, we are inviting all Providence Hall families to look through their old toys and clothes at home and send in anything that is in good condition to help our friends in Africa. Laura said that simple toys are the best: dolls, puzzles, match-box cars, blocks, etc. Toys that are electronic or battery-powered won’t work in Africa! If you have clothing that can be donated, that would be wonderful as well! Uganda is on the equator so warm, winter clothes are not needed.
